Eco Wave Power Secures Site for Taiwan’s First Wave Energy Pilot

  • Eco Wave Power and partner I-KE International won the rights to develop Taiwan’s first wave energy pilot at Suao Port.
  • The project could expand to 20 MW in the medium term and up to 400 MW along Taiwan’s coastline.

Eco Wave Power Global AB said its partner, I-KE International Ocean Energy Co., has secured exclusive rights to develop a wave energy pilot station at Taiwan’s Suao Port, marking the first time a commercial port area in the country will host wave power testing.

In addition, the Keelung Branch of Taiwan Port Corporation allocated 6.75 hectares on the port’s southern outer breakwater for wave energy projects, split into three zones of 2.25 hectares each. I-KE, a subsidiary of Lian Tat Company, won rights to Zone C in a competitive selection process completed in July.

Under a turnkey agreement signed in 2024, Eco Wave Power and I-KE will install Taiwan’s first 100-kilowatt (kW) onshore wave energy conversion unit at the site. Zone C faces the Pacific Ocean, offering stable wave conditions to support commercial-scale testing. The pilot is expected to lay the groundwork for expansion to 20 megawatts (MW) in the medium term and up to 400 MW along Taiwan’s coastline.

Eco Wave Power CEO Inna Braverman called the project a “groundbreaking moment,” highlighting both the company’s entry into Asia and Taiwan’s first official allocation of port space for wave energy. Lian Tat Chairman CY Huang also said the award affirmed “Taiwan’s readiness to embrace marine renewables” and positioned Suao Port as a global green energy demonstration hub.
