ECOWAS ROGEAP, Ecobank, World Bank Empower Nigerian Solar Entrepreneurs

  • This initiative is part of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), which aims to foster the development of a regional market for standalone solar energy systems.
  • The project has already disbursed grants totalling $800,000 to Nigerian SMEs, enhancing their participation in the off-grid solar energy value chain.

In a significant move to boost the off-grid solar energy sector in Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with Ecobank Nigeria and the World Bank, has successfully trained over 100 entrepreneurs through a specialised programme focused on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

This initiative is part of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP), which aims to foster the development of a regional market for standalone solar energy systems.

Funded by the World Bank, with additional support from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the Directorate General of International Cooperation (DGIS) of the Government of the Netherlands, ROGEAP seeks to promote sustainable energy solutions and economic growth in the region.

The project has already disbursed grants totalling $800,000 to Nigerian SMEs, enhancing their participation in the off-grid solar energy value chain.

During a three-day Entrepreneurship Business Training held in Lagos, El Hadji Sylla, Senior Adviser at the ECOWAS Commission’s ROGEAP, highlighted the importance of capacity-building for SMEs in the solar energy sector. The workshops, conducted in Abuja and Lagos, were designed to enhance these businesses’ technical and financial capabilities, positioning them for growth and long-term sustainability.

“The capacity-building workshops are crucial for enhancing the technical and financial capabilities of SMEs in the solar energy sector,” Sylla said. “Our goal is to better position these businesses for growth and long-term sustainability in the renewable energy sector.”

Sylla also revealed that ECOWAS is in discussions with Ecobank Group to establish mechanisms for providing technical and financial support to SMEs in the solar energy ecosystem. This includes extending direct credit lines to eligible businesses, ensuring they have the resources to thrive in the growing solar energy market.

The collaboration between ECOWAS, Ecobank, and the World Bank underscores a commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and economic development in Nigeria. By empowering SMEs in the off-grid solar energy sector, the initiative aims to create a robust and self-sustaining market for standalone solar energy systems, contributing to the country’s energy transition goals and economic growth.

As Nigeria continues to explore renewable energy options, this partnership serves as a model for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the solar energy sector.

The initiative is poised to drive significant advancements in Nigeria’s renewable energy landscape, creating jobs, stimulating economic development, and promoting a greener future by providing the necessary training, financial support, and technical assistance.
