- Anglo American Platinum has contracted a consortium to deploy a 100MW solar plant at its Mogalakwena platinum mine.
- The plant will commence construction in Q4 2022
- The Mining giant plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
EDF Renewables South Africa and Pele Green Energy are set to deploy a 100MWp solar PV plant at Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena platinum mine. The South African mining company is deploying the plant as part of its environmental strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its mines. Anglo American has set a target of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations by 2040.
The plant will require no permits to be constructed as South Africa’s recent legislation allows for the construction of embedded clean energy generation plants of up to 100MW without approval from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).
EDF and Pele Green Energy will commence the plant’s construction in Q4 2022, with the plant’s commissioning planned for late 2023. Under the company’s environmental strategy, it will soon power the Mogalakwena mine with green hydrogen. The Green hydrogen will be supplied by French company Engie and Release by Scatec as a pilot project. Engie is already constructing the green hydrogen facilities at the mine site.
