EDF, Anglo American Target SA as Hub for Renewable Energy Generation

  • South Africa becomes the target of RREE project.

The Renewables unit of the France-based EDF and Anglo American Plc are working on a project partnership plan to deliver a Regional Renewable Energy Ecosystem (RREE) in South Africa. The ecosystem is expected to include a 5GW capacity, which will benefit the Multinational’s mining operations in the country.

Based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the collaboration is being designed so that the scope two emissions generated as a result of Anglo American’s energy demand from the grid in South Africa alternatively met from clean energy sources by 2030.

Between 3GW and 5GW of solar, wind, and energy storage facilities are expected to be installed in the country due to the partnership over the next decade. Anglo American seeks to attain net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations fleet by 2040. With the renewable energy supply set up in South Africa, the company expects to have 56% of its energy supply come from renewable energy sources by 2023. 

The project in South Africa is envisaged to be funded by several partners who will provide equity funding and help offset debt funding for the RREE project.
