Australia’s Federation Asset Management Pty Ltd and Edify Energy (Edify) have finished building co-located battery storage projects in New South Wales that have a combined capacity of 150 MW/300 MWh and feature Tesla equipment.
According to Edify Energy, the facility is the biggest battery system in the Australian state and can store enough electricity to power 40,000 homes for two hours during times of peak demand.
The Riverina and Darlington Point energy storage facility is a lithium-ion battery made up of three separate but connected systems that will supply electricity to the National Electricity Market (NEM). It is situated in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Specifically, these are the 65 MW/130 MW Riverina Energy Storage System 2, the 25 MW/50 MWh Darlington Point Energy Storage System, and the 60 MW/120 MWh Riverina Energy Storage System 1. All of them are powered by the Tesla Megapack technology.
The output of Riverina 1 was pre-sold to Shell Energy, while the other two facilities will serve EnergyAustralia for a period of ten years.
In April 2022, Sydney-based Federation Asset Management acquired a 90% share in the battery project, designating it as the initial investment for its Sustainable Australian Real Asset (SARA) fund. The management of the system will be handled by Edify, the system’s developer, which retains a 10% stake.
