Renewable power producer EDP Renewables SA has announced the commissioning of its 8.4 MW solar plant in Portugal, forming part of the company’s first wind-solar hybrid facility in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Mina de Orgueirel Solar Plant was constructed next to the 11 MW Mosteiro Wind Park in the Portuguese municipality of Sabugal.
EDP revealed that the photovoltaic (PV) plant has more than 17,000 bifacial solar panels. With Mosteiro’s eight turbines, the hybrid asset should generate up to 39.5 GWh per year, enough to power more than 30,000 people annually.
The wind park has been in operation since 2004 and has produced over 350 GWh of clean energy up till now.
“We fully intend to carry on investing in the hybridisation of parks held in our portfolio, both in Portugal as well as in other regions with strong development potential”, states Duarte Bello, EDPR executive director for Europe and Latin America.
EDPR’s Iberian Peninsula hybrid projects exceed 1,600 MW in capacity. The firm noted these schemes are either in the study or development phase.
