EDP Renewables Powers Italy’s Future with New Solar Plants

  • EDP Renewables (EDPR) connects two new solar plants in Italy, generating 156 GWh annually to power 60,000 homes and cut 67,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
  • EDPR plans to add 200 MW of new solar and wind projects in Italy, expanding its nearly 1 GW renewable energy capacity in the country.
  • EDPR’s subsidiary, EDP Energia Italia, developed 130 MWp solar projects for industrial clients, supporting Italy’s growing demand for clean energy.

EDP Renewables (EDPR) has strengthened its presence in Italy by connecting two new solar plants to the grid. The Castrum 13 plant in Montalto di Castro and the Tuscia 21 plant in Tuscania, both located in the Viterbo region, have a combined capacity of 103 MWp (82 MWac).

Together, they generate over 156 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power nearly 60,000 homes. These projects help prevent the emission of 67,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year.

Following this success, EDPR inaugurated its largest solar plant in Italy at the Tuscania site, with a capacity of 72 MWp (62.4 MWac). Earlier in 2024, the company also commissioned the Boccadoro plant, a 10 MWp (8.8 MWac) facility in the Puglia region, further advancing its clean energy efforts across the country.

Italy has set ambitious targets for its energy transition, and EDPR is crucial in driving this change. “These projects show our commitment to Italy’s energy goals,” said Roberto Pasqua, Executive Director for Southern and Eastern Europe at EDPR. He confirmed that the company will invest over 200 MW of new solar and wind projects in the coming months.

Since entering the Italian market in 2010, EDPR has expanded its portfolio, moving from wind power to solar energy. The company now operates or builds nearly 1 GW of renewable energy capacity, focusing mainly on southern Italy, which plays a key role in the country’s clean energy transition.

In addition to large-scale projects, EDPR supports distributed energy generation through its subsidiary, EDP Energia Italia. This division has developed over 130 MWp of solar projects for industrial clients. With more than 1,000 installations, EDP Energia Italia helps meet the country’s renewable energy demand. In 2023 alone, EDPR signed contracts for 54.5 MWp and installed 51.5 MWp of solar power for commercial clients.

EDPR’s steady expansion directly meets Italy’s rising demand for renewable energy. By supporting local economic growth and lowering carbon emissions, the company continues to strengthen its position as a leader in Europe’s clean energy sector. Its investments benefit both the environment and Italy’s economy.

These new solar projects mark a major step forward in EDPR’s mission to help Italy transition to clean energy. With a growing portfolio, EDPR continues to deliver innovative energy solutions that align with the country’s renewable goals. By investing in solar and wind power, EDPR powers homes and businesses and builds a more sustainable future for Italy.

EDPR’s increased presence in Italy reflects its broader role as a leader in Europe’s renewable energy market. As Italy works toward its climate targets, EDPR’s projects will remain essential in helping the country meet its energy transition goals.
