EEP signs Optical Fibre Lease Agreement with Safaricom

  • Ethiopian Electric Power is set to lease its optical fibre to Safaricom Ethiopia.
  • The EEP will earn up to 140 million ETB per year in the first phase of the lease.

Ethiopian Electric Power and Safaricom Ethiopia have agreed to share optical fibre infrastructure in the country for the next five years. The agreement was signed by Ashebir Balcha, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, and Anwar Soussa, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia. The deal covers 4097 km of optical fibre line rental in the first phase, 2078 km in the second phase, and 2904 km in the third phase.

Asheber Balcha, Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation CEO, stated that the deal creates the groundwork for the two companies to collaborate. On his part, Anwar Sowssa, CEO of Safaricom-Ethiopia, praised Ethiopia’s telecom sector growth and emphasized his company’s willingness to cooperate with the EPP. He also stated that efforts are being made to provide the public with high-quality telecommunications services.

In the first phase of its optical fibre line rental, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) expects to earn up to 140 million ETB per year. The EPP owns approximately 15,000 kilometres of optical fibre cables, of which Ethio-Telecom leases 8745 kilometres.
