- Malawi’s EGENCO has contracted Chint to build a 10MWp solar PV plant.
- The plant is the first phase of a potential 50MWp project.
- The project, which will cost $12m, will be financed by EGENCO.
Malawi’s Electricity Generation Company Limited (EGENCO) has awarded the contract to develop the first phase of its Salima solar power plant to Chint. The Chinese company will install a 10MWp solar PV in sanjoka, southern Malawi. EGENCO selected the company from a tender process that it launched in 2019.
The 10MWp plant is the first phase of a proposed 20MWp plant set to increase the country’s grid capacity. The development of this phase is set to take 24 months. EGENCO also plans to expand the plant by up to 50MWp.
EGENCO’s, which will cost up to 10 billion Malawian company’s(over $12 million), is Malawi’s financed entirely by the company. Malawi, which is dependent on hydropower (which provides 95 per cent of current capacity), wants to diversify its energy mix over the next five years reducing hydro’s contribution to 76 per cent.
