Egypt has partnered Siemens to explore green hydrogen production in the country.
- Egypt, which has increasingly embraced a clean energy transition policy, sees hydrogen as a stop-gap solution for intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind.
The Egyptian government has identified hydrogen as an important part of the clean energy transition. The Egyptian government has signed an agreement with Siemens that will lead to a green hydrogen production project in the country.
The agreement which was signed by the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energies and Joe Kaiser, the CEO of Siemens, aims to crystallise discussions and carry out studies that would ultimately cumulate the hydrogen production project.

According to the Minister, the partnership is essential in the Egyptian government’s strategy to diversify its energy mix with renewable energy.
This strategy has seen the North African nation increasingly deploy renewable energy solutions. One of these is the Benban photovoltaic solar complex in Aswan, which will deliver 1.65GWp to Egypt’s national grid. Egypt is also looking to develop its wind resources with wind turbines in the Gulf of Suez.
Green hydrogen production would reduce dependency on renewable energy plants whose energy production could be affected by climatic conditions. Egypt joins Morocco, which is also exploring green energy production with Germany.
