Egypt Breaks Ground on $220m Solar Cell, Storage Hub

  • Egypt has begun construction of the ATUM Solar industrial complex in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, a $220 million project.
  • The facility will feature a 2 GW solar cell factory, a 2 GW solar panel plant, and a 1 GWh storage unit.

Egyptian authorities launched construction of a solar and energy storage industrial complex on Monday in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. They named the project ATUM Solar and located it in the TEDA Egypt industrial zone in Ain Sokhna. The project spans 200,000 square meters and is valued at $220 million.

Meanwhile, the consortium managing the project includes China’s JA Solar, the Egyptian firm AH, the Emirati company Global South Utilities, and the Bahraini fund Infinity Capital. They will also build a 2-GW solar cell factory, a 2-GW solar panel plant, and a 1-GWh energy storage unit.

Officials said the complex will export all solar cells and supply energy storage systems to local and selected regional markets.

Furthermore, Hossam Heiba, Director General of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones, stated that Egypt will commence large-scale solar panel production in early 2026. He also said local content could reach 90% and predicted that several factories would start in the first quarter of 2026. He described the project as a key step in building Egypt’s renewable energy industry.

The government said the project will expand renewable energy in the electricity mix and position Egypt as a regional hub for clean energy production and export.
