- Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently laid the foundation stone for a plant that will convert solid waste into electricity in Egypt’s Giza governorate.
- The project is being implemented by the Indian company ReNergy Group Partners.
Solid waste to energy at Giza is proceeding as planned. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly officially broke ground on the project site at Abu Rawash on April 5, 2023. Abu Rawash is a municipality that is 8 kilometers north of Giza and 15 kilometers west of Cairo. The power plant is being constructed by ReNergy Group Partners, a Coimbatore, India-based business, as part of a DBOO (Design, Build, Own and Operate), a type of public-private collaboration. (PPP).
ReNergy anticipates spending $120 million on the building of the waste-incineration facility. The plant will utilize the heat produced by the daily burning of 1,200 tons of solid trash to run the 30 MW facility. The plant will be connected to Egypt’s national electricity grid under a 25-year power purchase agreement, after which ownership will be transferred to the Giza Governorate.
ReNergy is developing the project in partnership with the National Organization for Military Production (MOMP), Green Tech and OAK Holding. “About 40% of the subcontracting work will be done by Egyptian companies, which will contribute to the localization of a new industry in Egypt. Some of the equipment will be built in the Ministryspending of Military Production’s factories,” says the company led by Robert Valk.
The Giza waste-to-energy plant will also host Egyptian students as part of their scientific research into converting solid waste into electricity.
