EGYPT: Egypt Prepares for Impact of 2nd Filling of GERD

Egyptian Minister of water and irrigation Mohamed Abd El Atty has raised alarm on the impact of the 2nd filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) by the Ethiopian government.

Minister El Atty has said the worst-case scenario for the country will be a case of natural drought in the River Nile. A natural drought will have adverse effects on Egypt and its water interests. The countries affected by the construction of the GERD are Egypt and Sudan. Egypt, and Sudan have continued a push for legally binding agreements to prevent a negative impact of the construction on their countries.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has said the country will spare no effort in the protection of its water interests. He threatened Egypt will be forced to act if, Ethiopia uses the dam for any purpose other than electricity generation which it was originally intended for.
