Egypt and Saudi Arabia have successfully awarded the contract for the interconnection project between both countries. The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) and the Egyptian Transmission Company (EETC) awarded the contract to a consortium of firms led by Hitachi Energy. The project involves the construction of a 500kV, 1350km network of overhead power lines and subsea cables.
Other members of the consortium include Saudi Services and Orascom Construction. Saudi Services will handle the electronic mechanic works while Orascom Construction will provide system studies, design and engineering, transformers, valves, high-voltage equipment, technical advisory and other services for the project.
The project which would facilitate energy trade between Africa and the Middle East will enable the transmission of 3,000MW between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
