- Egypt to develop the nuclear sector
- Plans to build more nuclear power plants
The Head of the Nuclear Fuel Sector at Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), Hesham Hegazy, has stated that the country will further expand the nuclear sector. Egypt recently approved the construction of Hegazy says the government plans to build more nuclear power plants on the north coast.
Speaking at a panel discussion on the role of nuclear energy in achieving sustainable development, Hegazy said that the Egyptian state is seeking to generate and produce electricity through new and renewable energies, including nuclear energy, amid its contribution to the creation of an integrated mix with fossil fuels to generate electric power.
Vice President of the Rosatom Regional Center in the Middle East and North Africa, Alexander Voronkov, who spoke at the seminar, said the NPPA’s plan was an ambitious plan to secure Egypt’s future nuclear energy needs.
Former NPPA Deputy Head, Ali Abdel Nabi told Al-Monitor has supported the development of the nuclear sector; he said nuclear power would help boost local manufacturing and guarantee technological national security. ”Nuclear plants provide electricity in much greater proportions than plants powered by gas or renewable energy such as wind, as these plants operate at 93% of the number of hours per year, compared to 27% for renewable energy plants and 56% for gas plants. In other words, nuclear plants serve the sustainable development goals better,” he noted.
