- Egypt to increase interconnection capacity with Libya
- The country plans to increase the transmission capacity from 150MW to 2,000MW
The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohammed Shaker, has announced plans to increase the interconnection capacity with Libya to 2,000MW. Egypt and Libya trade electricity through an interconnected transmission line that currently transmits 150MW at a voltage of 220kV. In addition, Egypt will increase the voltage capacity from 220kV to 500kV to accommodate the increase in capacity.
In addition, Shaker further stated that the Ministry would embark on several expansion projects to complement the increase in capacity on the Libyan interconnection. The projects include the Borg El-Arab-Marsa Matrouh 220kV transmission line by 260km and up to 500kV voltage, the Marsa Matrouh-Salloum and the Slloum-Tobruk transmission lines.
