EGYPT: Egyptian MP Suggests UAE is Funding GERD

An Egyptian Parliamentarian, MP Diaa al-Din Dawoud, has suggested that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is financing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The controversial dam constructed on the River Nile has put Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia at loggerheads.

MP Dawoud made this allegation while discussing the new Sukuk bonds draft Bill. “There are countries that contribute to the construction of the Renaissance Dam and so that no one in a headscarf and thobe [in reference to the Gulf countries’ traditional dress for men] interferes in such projects”, he said.

In response to the suggestion, Egyptian Parliament Speaker, Hanafi Jabali, asked that MP Dawoud’s comments be deleted from the records. Also, Egyptian Lawmaker, Mustafa Bakri in response to the suggestion by MP Dawoud, said, “We all respect our Arab brothers, and what the lawmaker mentioned gave indications that he should not have given, that Gulf countries finance the Renaissance Dam”.

The three countries have failed to reach an agreement GERD construction as Ethiopia plans to begin filling the dam in July.
