- The green data centre would harness about 200MW of solar and wind energy.
- Egypt had announced plans to implement renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 10GW.
Egypt is preparing to establish a green data centre project. This project would harness about 200 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy power. The project aims to provide digital services to specific target customers worldwide. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Company for Petroleum & Industrial Services (INCOME), Record Digital Asset Ventures, and SIC Investment for the development and operation of the project.
The implementation of the project will take place within privately operated free zones and will be executed over two phases. Each phase will involve establishing a power generation system capable of harnessing solar and wind energy, with a capacity of 100 megawatts. In December 2023, the Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouly, met with China National Building Material and Chinese Hony Capital to explore potential collaboration in localising solar power station components and semiconductors manufacturing.
This highlights Egypt’s proactive approach to nurturing its renewable energy industry, particularly in producing clean energy project components. Also in October, the Ministry of International Cooperation announced that the country wants to implement renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 10 gigawatts, with investments amounting to $10 billion, all within five years.
