- To build several reactors to improve economic development
A government official has stated that works on Egypt’s first nuclear power plant are moving forward. The official who confirmed the news stated that the country has plans to build more nuclear reactors in several regions to support economic development and increasing demand for power.
Head of Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), Hesham Hegazy, who spoke at a panel discussion on the role of nuclear energy in sustainable development, noted that Russian state-owned nuclear corporation, Rosatom, is leading the construction of the planned four Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors at the 4.8-GW El Dabaa nuclear power plant, which will be Egypt’s first commercial nuclear power generation facility. Russia will provide funding for the construction of the El Dabaa plant to the tune of $25 billion. The plant is expected to become operational in 2026.
Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, has stated that the corporation will begin full-scale construction of the El Dabaa plant next year. Rosatom and Egypt first agreed on the plan for El Dabaa in 2015.
