Egypt’s Electricity Increases by 17.2% from Renewables

  • Egypt grew by 17.2%, from 8.7 billion kilowatt-hours to 10.2 billion kilowatt-hours.
  • Egypt is aiming for higher use of renewable energy.
  • Egypt will also host the 27th UN Climate Change Conference.

The amount of electrical energy generated by renewable energy sources (wind/solar energy) in Egypt grew by 17.2%, from 8.7 billion kilowatt-hours in 2019/2020 to 10.2 billion kilowatt-hours in 2020/2021. It’s worth noting that Egypt has the world’s largest wind and solar energy capacity in the Middle East and North Africa.

In Egypt, the number of natural gas-powered cars climbed from 42,292 in 2019/2020 to 51,000 in 2020/2021, with an increase in the number of natural gas-powered car refuelling stations reaching 530 by the end of 2021.

Egypt improved its ranking in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) in 2022, rising to 21st place out of 64 nations (its total emissions account for more than 90% of global emissions).

As part of its Egypt Vision 2030 program, Egypt aims for higher use of renewable energy. Egypt has been building the Benban Solar Energy Park in the southern province of Aswan, which is one of the world’s largest solar plants, for the past few years.

Later this year, Egypt will also host the 27th UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, a Red Sea vacation city.
