- Ireland to connect grid network to France
Ireland’s national grid operator Eirgrid has kickstarted the plan to build a €1 billion power line to connect with the country’s grid with its counterpart in France Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE). The transmission line called the Celtic Interconnector will transmit 700MW. Eirgrid has formally applied to An Bord Pleanála for permission on the Irish components.
Chief Infrastructure Officer Eirgrid, Michael Mahon, stated that the project was developed for several years in consultation with host communities. “The delivery of this project will bring a number of benefits, including increasing Ireland’s security of electricity supply by providing a direct connection to another EU country.”
The Celtic Interconnector aims to connect the European electricity network and help cut electricity prices in the long term. The European Union is providing €530 million in funding for the project.
