- Ekiti State Assembly Introduces Legislation to end the Environmental Protection Agency Law of 2009.
The Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed two bills, the Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2023, and the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2023, to enhance the state’s development and economy. These bills were approved after undergoing review by the Committee of the Whole and voice votes conducted by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye.
The first bill, the Ekiti State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2023, was endorsed based on the report presented by the Committee on Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Hon. Femi Akindele. This bill aims to establish state-owned electricity generation, transmission, and distribution services in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. It also outlines provisions for electricity supply through the Ekiti State Electricity Board and Ekiti State Power Company while facilitating opportunities for private investment in electricity generation and distribution within the state.
However, the second bill, the Ekiti State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2023, represents the first privately sponsored bill to pass in the Seventh Assembly. Hon. Femi Fatunla, who represents the Ikole constituency, initiated this bill.
During the same session, a bill was introduced to re-enact the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency Law in 2023, alongside related matters. This bill was debated and subsequently referred to the Committee on Environment for further legislative examination.
