Ekiti Targets Energy Security with Grid and IPP Expansion

  • Ekiti State expanded grid and IPP electricity projects to improve power supply for key institutions and communities.
  • The upgrades align with the state’s strategy to boost energy security, economic activity and public services.

Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity access across the state. The Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, said the state is strengthening the national grid interface and expanding its Independent Power Project to key institutions.

Aluko spoke during a stakeholder engagement in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday. He said the electricity projects under the National Integrated Power Project are improving both supply and reliability. He described the interventions as part of Ekiti’s path toward energy security and economic development.

The state is extending a four-kilometre 33kV feeder from the Central Bank Junction in Ado-Ekiti to Iyin-Ekiti. It is also extending a six-kilometre 11kV line from Ayoba Junction to the Ureje axis. The 33kV line will boost public supply to the Iyin university corridor. The 11kV line will supply power from the IPP to the Water Treatment Plant, the Technical College, and the Technology Incubation Centre in Ado-Ekiti.

Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company approved the projects under the federal government’s transmission and distribution intervention scheme. Ekiti is also expanding its IPP to serve new institutions. The plant currently delivers 2.6MW at peak periods and now supplies government offices, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital and other revenue-generating facilities.

Aluko said the interventions align with Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s goal of delivering stable and sustainable electricity for industrial growth and job creation. He said the proposed state grid concept will complement the national grid and create alternative power pathways for communities. The federal interventions have also delivered transformers to several communities in Ado-Ekiti, including Uso-Agbaye, Ofin, Olorunsogo, Toluwani and Omisanjana.

Project Manager Nwovah Chicoba assured host communities of cooperation and timely delivery. Community representatives praised the projects and said the upgrades will boost socio-economic activity.

Aluko said the transmission and distribution upgrades will improve power supply to homes, schools, businesses and water facilities across Ekiti.
