- After two significant electrical outages and an explosion at a substation, the Nelson Mandela Bay metro is preparing for a week without water.
In South Africa, a sizable substation in the industrial growth zone of Nelson Mandela Bay exploded, resulting in more extensive water disruptions in a city already severely affected by persistent water shortages and electricity problems.
The water supply line experienced its third significant electrical blackout in four days as a result of the explosion.
Police claimed that the substation showed evidence of a forced entry. Nelson Mandela Bay has experienced a long-standing water supply crisis, with supply dams currently holding only 6.97% of their original volume of water, or about 19,114 megaliters.
Since Nelson Mandela Bay is one of the largest metro areas in the nation, managing a water issue is particularly challenging. Its primary source of water is the Nooitgedacht Water System, which necessitates pumping water from its eastern to western sides but is unfeasible due to power outages.
