- Total electricity production fell by 0.5% to 7,026 GWh, with a slight 0.3% increase in local market production and an 8% drop in peak demand to 3,073 MW.
- Residential areas installed 245 MW of photovoltaic systems, and authorities granted 314 authorisations for 112 MW in industrial, tertiary, and agricultural sectors.
- Electricity sales decreased by 3%, with significant drops in paper and publishing (-17%).
The National Energy and Mines Observatory in Tunisia released a report on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, showing total electricity production decreased by 0.5%, reaching 7,026 GWh by the end of May 2024. This figure includes renewable self-production.
Despite the overall decline, local market production rose slightly by 0.3%. Imports from Algeria and Libya met 13% of regional demand in the first five months of 2024.
STEG (Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz) held 96% of the national electricity production by the end of May. Production from natural gas sources (STEG + Independent Power Producers) dropped by 2%, while renewable energy sources contributed 5.7%.
By the end of May, residential areas installed 245 MW of photovoltaic systems. Additionally, the authorities granted 314 authorisations for 112 MW in the industrial, tertiary, and agricultural sectors.
The report highlighted an 8% drop in peak electricity demand, from 3,337 MW in May 2023 to 3,073 MW in May 2024.
Electricity sales decreased by 3% from the previous year. This resulted from a 14% decline in high-voltage customer sales and a 0.5% drop in medium-voltage customer sales. Low-voltage sales comprised about 75% of total sales, mainly for residential use.
Industrial consumers accounted for 60% of demand among high- and medium-voltage customers. Most sectors saw a decline in sales. The paper and publishing industry dropped by 17%, IMCCV industries by 13%, primary metallurgical industries by 10%, and the industrial food and tobacco sector by 7%. However, the chemical, petroleum, and mining industries reported sales increases of 8% and 5%, respectively.
While electricity production and sales declined, renewable energy installations and specific industrial sectors showed positive trends.
