Electricity production in Morocco increased by 2.4 per cent in the first eleven months of 2024, following a 1.7 per cent rise the previous year, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts.
This growth resulted from production increases in the first, third, and fourth quarters of 2024, with the first quarter growing by 3 per cent, the third by 4.4 per cent, and the fourth by 2.2 per cent. However, the second quarter of 2024 saw a decline of 2.7 per cent.
By sector, the growth by November 2024 was mainly driven by a significant 26.2 per cent increase in renewable energy production, following a 15.2 per cent rise in 2023. The private sector also saw a 0.9 per cent rise in electricity production, while production from the National Office for Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE) remained nearly unchanged, with a slight increase of 0.3 per cent after a drop of 10.3 per cent in 2023.
Also, net electricity demand grew by 3.7 per cent by the end of November 2024, following a 3.5 per cent rise in 2023. Imported electricity saw a sharp increase of 31.4 per cent, while exported electricity fell by 35.1 per cent.
Electricity consumption notably rose in the first two months of the fourth quarter of 2024, driven by a 26.6 per cent surge in sales of high, very high, and medium-voltage electricity, especially to the manufacturing sector, which saw a 51.6 per cent increase.
