The Spanish consortium Enalter made up of solar PV specialist Alter Enersun and Enagas Renovable, a renewable gas firm, is set to explore opportunities to develop solar, green hydrogen and green methane projects for a future lithium processing plant in the region of Extremadura, western Spain.
The Enalter duo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Extremadura New Energies (ENE), owners of a 75% stake in the San Jose lithium project in the region, to decarbonise the processing plant. According to a joint announcement on Tuesday, the project will include the development of a 350-MW solar PV farm, a renewable hydrogen and methane production plant with a maximum capacity of 180 MW. Under the terms of the MoU, ENE and Enalter will set up a joint company in the provincial capital that will manage the projects.
Also, the parties will work on the design to determine the technical-economic feasibility of the project, evaluate sites in Caceres and start the permitting process. The plan will launch construction in 2025 and commission the facilities in 2026.
