- Enel’s 145MW wind farm project commences operation
- The wind farm will generate 573GWh yearly
Italian electric utility Enel has said that its 145MW Garob wind farm located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa has begun commercial operation. The wind farm has a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Eskom.
Enel estimates that the new wind facility would generate 573GWh and reduce CO2 emissions by 600,000 tonnes annually. The wind farm was secured at the 4th tender round of April 2015 SA’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). Local subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA managed the EUR 200 million (USD 225.7m) project.
The Italian major noted that by adding Garob, EGP RSA now has ten operational wind and solar farms, with a combined installed capacity of over 800MW.
It envisions further expansion of its portfolio through participating in future tenders and PPAs with industrial and commercial clients.
