Enel North America today has announced the start of construction of a project in Texas that combines 186 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity with a 115-MW/169-MWh battery energy storage system.
The Ables Springs Solar + Storage Project is in Kaufman County and is expected to go live in late 2024. The North American arm of Italian utility group Enel SpA says it is the largest operator of utility-scale energy storage in Texas, where battery adoption is growing to ensure grid stability in the face of extreme weather and increasing power demand.
Ables Springs is Enel’s 17th renewables project in Texas. The company has an installed base of 3.8 GW of wind and solar capacity and over 1 GW of grid-scale storage in the state. Enel and Red River Renewable Energy LLC, a joint venture between SunChase Power LLC and Eolian LP, developed the project.
