- Enel has set new targets for decarbonisation.
- The company plans to shut down all coal-fired plants by 2027.
- The company will also increase EV charging stations to 4 million by 2030.
Italian utility Enel says it plans to increase its clean energy output by 300 per cent by 2030 to 145GW and phase out coal generation by 2027. The company had earlier planned to shut down its coal plants in 2030. Currently, Enel has about 85.5GW of net installed capacity, with 46.6GW coming from renewables.
The Company announced the new targets at a “High-level Dialogue on Energy” meeting convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to create a roadmap for the transition to sustainable clean energy for all by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
Enel is also seeking to reach 20TWh of energy storage and 20GW of demand response capacity by 2030. In addition, Enel plans to reduce its greenhouse emissions to 148 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per kWh by 2023 and 82 grams by 2030.
Enel also wants to increase the number of electric vehicle charging points it operates to over 4 million by 2030, up from 186,000.
