Enel Signs VPPA for Spanish Wind and Solar Projects

  • Enel has signed a VPPA with Johnson & Johnson.
  • The energy supply will come from 104MW of projects under construction in Spain.
  • This will enable Johnson & Johnson to utilise 100% renewable energy in Europe.

Enel Green Power has signed a pan-European virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Johnson & Johnson for clean energy from Spain. Under the 10-year VPPA, Enel will supply 270 GWh yearly from wind and solar plants. The agreement is set to begin in January 2023. VPPA allows companies to “100 per cent clean” without ever having to put in an onsite renewable generation or directly source energy from renewable power.

The energy to be supplied will be produced by three renewable plants currently under construction, including 85 per cent from the Campillo 2 and 3 wind farms located in the Spanish province of Cuenca. Enel will supply 15 per cent from the 47MW Veracruz solar PV plant in Badajoz.

Johnson & Johnson believes that this VPPA is essential to reaching its targets of 100 per cent of its European energy needs being met by renewable sources. Enel Green Power CEO Salvatore Bernabei stated that “the VPPA is a vital tool in Johnson & Johnson’s progress towards the equivalent of 100% electricity from renewable sources in Europe by 2023.”
