Engie and Scatec to Produce Green Hydrogen for Mogalakwena Mine

  • Engie will produce green hydrogen at Anglo American’s platinum mine in Limpopo.
  • The company will utilise a 616kWp modular solar solution provided by Release by Scatec.
  • The green hydrogen will be used to power mine operations.

French energy company Engie has signed an agreement with British mining company Anglo American to produce green hydrogen at its Mogalakwena platinum mine in Limpopo province of South Africa. Engie will work with Release by Scatec, Scatec’s modular solar power generation subsidiary, to implement the project. As part of the agreement, Scatec will supply modular solar energy to Engie’s for two years. The modular solar plant will have a capacity of 616kWp of solar energy.

Hans Olav Kvalvaag, senior vice president Release at Scatec, stated, “We are proud to support Engie and Anglo American in this important project. This is Scatec’s first involvement in powering hydrogen production and further demonstrates the potential of pre-assembled and containerised solar PV in the mining industry.” The green hydrogen produced will be used to power Anglo American’s facilities. Several other companies are currently researching and developing pilot green hydrogen projects in the country. Sasol, for instance, wants to develop green hydrogen to power transport facilities in the country.
