Eni Begins Oil Exploration in Côte d’Ivoire, LNG Production in Congo

  • The oil exploration drilling operations for the well encountered light oil, gas, and condensates in various intervals of the Cenomanian age.
  • The project will achieve a plateau gas liquefaction capacity of approximately 158.9 billion cubic feet yearly.

Eni SpA has successfully explored well Murene 1X on the discovery named Calao in Côte d’Ivoire, the second largest in the country after the Baleine field. In a press release, the firm stated that drilling operations for the well encountered light oil, gas, and condensates in various intervals of Cenomanian age characterised by good to excellent permeability values.

Eni, which operates the block in partnership with Petroci Holding, said preliminary assessments indicate potential resources ranging between 1 million and 1.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe). In addition to block CI-205, the company holds participating interests in five other blocks in Ivorian Deep. The Italian energy major also has equity production of hydrocarbons totalling approximately 22,000 boe per day (boepd) from the Baleine field, which started production in August 2023.

In a similar development, Eni announced the commencement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The firm’s Congo LNG project, sanctioned in December 2022, came on stream after just one year. The first LNG cargo will sail to Piombino’s regasification terminal in Italy.

The project, situated within the Marine XII permit, will achieve a plateau gas liquefaction capacity of approximately 158.9 billion cubic feet (4.5 billion cubic meters) per annum and mark zero flaring from operated activities in the country. The company added that Eni will market the volumes, strengthen and expand the company’s LNG portfolio, and support efforts towards energy security and transition.

The first of two floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessels for Eni SPA’s Congo LNG project received its first gas in December 2023. The Tango FLNG facility, currently moored in Congo-Brazzaville waters, has a liquefaction capacity of about 35.31 billion cubic feet (one billion cubic meters) annually. They expect the project’s second FLNG vessel to come onstream in 2025.
