- The Eni and YPF Argentina LNG project will deliver 12 Mt/year of liquefied natural gas through two floating gas units by 2029.
- The project marks a key milestone in Argentina’s plan to harness its vast Vaca Muerta shale gas reserves for export.
Italy’s Eni and Argentina’s YPF have advanced the Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project by signing the Final Technical Project Description (FTPD). This marks a significant step toward the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the 12 Mt/year LNG phase.
The large-scale project combines upstream and midstream operations, covering gas production, processing, transportation, and liquefaction. It will use two floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) units, each with a 6 Mt/year capacity, or about 9 billion cubic metres annually. Both are expected to begin operations by 2029, helping Argentina emerge as one of the fastest-growing LNG exporters.
Moreover, the development centres on the Vaca Muerta shale formation, which holds the world’s second-largest shale gas reserves. By tapping into this vast resource, Argentina plans to boost energy security and expand exports to Europe and Asia.
The FTPD agreement defines the technical structure, investment roadmap, and construction milestones. It follows the Head of Agreement (HoA) signed in June 2025, when Eni and YPF formally collaborated on gas development in Vaca Muerta.
In addition, both companies are prioritising sustainability and innovation. The floating LNG units will reduce onshore infrastructure, lower carbon emissions, and speed project delivery. This approach aligns with Argentina’s clean energy transition and sustainability goals.
Furthermore, the agreement strengthened bilateral cooperation between Italy and Argentina and enhanced Argentina’s reputation in the global energy market.
Ultimately, the Eni–YPF partnership marks a bold step toward transforming Argentina’s natural gas potential into a sustainable, export-driven energy future through strategic investment, technological progress, and shared vision.
