Enviro Automotive unveiled the Dayun Yuehu S5, the most affordable electric vehicle (EV) in South Africa. Priced at R399,900, it is over R100,000 cheaper than the BYD Dolphin, its nearest competitor. This new price point makes the Yuehu S5 accessible to more buyers, fitting well within the R300,000 to R400,000 range for new vehicles in the country.
The launch will drive EV adoption, as more South Africans can afford electric cars. Dayun, a Chinese company, started with motorcycles and commercial vehicles before entering the electric car market. In 2017, Dayun launched the first version of the Yuehu S5, a compact battery-electric SUV.
The Yuehu S5 features a 35kW front-mounted synchronous permanent magnet AC motor. This motor delivers 105Nm of peak torque through a single-speed gearbox. A 31.7kWh ternary lithium-ion battery powers the vehicle, providing a claimed range of 330km, ideal for daily commuting. The car supports AC and DC charging, allowing for easy home charging and quick recharges at DC fast-charging stations. It uses 10.7kWh of energy per 100km. A standard 220V charge takes about four hours, while a DC fast charger can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in under an hour.
The Dayun Yuehu S5 is available in two versions:
– Dayun Yuehu S5 Standard: R399,900
– Dayun Yuehu S5 VIP: R449,900
Both versions have a three-year or 60,000 km warranty and service plan, including roadside assistance. The battery warranty covers five years or 120,000 km. Service intervals occur every 12 months or 20,000 km.
With its competitive pricing and comprehensive features, the Dayun Yuehu S5 will significantly impact South Africa’s EV market.
