Eolus Vind AB, a Swedish renewable company, has partnered with Germany’s PNE AG in a joint venture (JV) to develop the 1 GW Kurzeme offshore wind project off Latvia.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, the two parties revealed that PNE had purchased a 50% stake in the project company SIA Kurzeme Offshore. This means the business is now  50-50 owned by Eolus and PNE.

Kurzeme’s offshore site is located off the west coast of Latvia in the Baltic Sea. Eolus has been developing the project since 2020 and has conducted initial studies. The press release reads it is “now adding resources and competence to the project” through cooperation with the German peer.

To date, an application for the project has been submitted, and the next phase is expected to include new partners conducting surveys for the environmental impact assessment. This should be done once the research license has been obtained.

The Kurzeme area is subject to an upcoming tender process.

The plan is to have the wind farm start commercial operation before 2030. Once online, its turbines will generate some 4.5 TWh of power per year.
