- EPA grants permit for Empire Offshore Wind Farm Project.
- Wind farm to supply power to New York.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted Empire Offshore Wind LLC a Clean Air Act permit for its 2.1-gigawatt (GW) offshore wind farm project near Long Island, New York. This permit follows an air quality analysis confirming compliance with federal standards.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) had previously approved the proposal. Empire Wind combines two projects – Empire Wind 1 and 2. It will be located 12 nautical miles south of Long Island and consist of 147 turbines.
The wind farm will supply power to New York through connections in Brooklyn and Long Beach. Empire Wind 1 and 2 will operate independently, with 57 and 90 turbines.
With a capacity to power over 700,000 homes annually, construction is set to begin in 2024, with operations starting within four years.
Initially developed by Equinor ASA and BP Plc, Empire Wind moves forward under Equinor’s sole ownership. Their joint venture ended in January via an asset swap agreement. This permit marks a milestone in renewable energy, advancing efforts for a cleaner, sustainable future.
