EPRA Increase in Electricity Rates Drains Consumers Financially

  • EPRA announces increase in electricity rates.
  • The EPRA’s announcement comes at a time when the majority of consumers are drained and unable to pay for the power provided by the KPLC.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) decided to announce an increase in electricity rates, and the Electricity Consumers Organization of Kenya has filed an urgent appeal with the High Court asking for an order to overturn that decision.

The society claims that before making any announcement regarding the increase, the regulatory authority did not conduct public participation or engage with the public.

The aforementioned increase was announced in a Kenyan Gazette notice on March 24, 2023, and it took effect on April 1 of that same year. According to the society’s Executive Director, Eng. Isaack Ndereva, if the increase is implemented, it will have an impact on almost 9 million users.

The EPRA’s announcement comes at a time when the majority of consumers are emotionally drained and unable to pay for the power provided by the KPLC. The society is requesting an additional prohibition order to prevent the implementation of new electricity pricing. The application is presented to the judge before the judicial review division through the law office of Ngaruiya Gitau corporation and advocate.
