Escom officials claim that they have begun repairing the damaged electrical infrastructure and reestablishing power in some of the Cyclone Freddy-affected districts. The infrastructure was destroyed by Cyclone Freddy, leaving the nation with only one hour of electricity every day. Authorities claim that three days ago the water taps stopped working because there was no electricity to power the water pumps.
Before addressing localized issues, Escom spokesperson Kitty Chingota said they first fixed high voltage lines and those feeding critical service providers including hospitals and water boards. She was confident that the restoration work would be finished by Friday of the following week.
“The weather is far much better now, we can work under these conditions. The good thing is we are making sure that the lines we are working on do not have power supply at that time,” said Chingota.
Cyclone Freddy has now killed 225 people in the southern region.
