South African utility company Eskom has launched a Renewable Energy Tariff pilot programme to supply clean energy to commercial and industrial customers. Eskom will supply consumers via its Sere Wind Farm. The programme targets commercial and industrial consumers looking to utilise clean energy without deploying their own assets.
According to Eskom, the programme offers customers a mechanism to achieve their renewable energy commitments without initial capital investment or entering long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). “This offer allows customers to have a 24-hour blended renewable supply to their facility, and allows them the flexibility to relocate premises without needing to move renewable energy assets,” Eskom stated.
The tariff will be a declining block tariff; the more energy a customer purchases as a percentage of total consumption, the lower the rate. Tariffs will be reviewed and adjusted after 12 months based on customers’ actual energy usage percentages. Eskom Group Executive for Distribution, Monde Bala, added that the programme provides businesses with an opportunity to gain savings in electricity usage.
Only Eskom customers with a clean energy demand of 399GWh annually can participate in the pilot stage programme. The pilot stage is expected to run till March 2023.
