The European Commission announced auctions of 244 million EU carbon permits from January to August next year through the Emissions Trading System (ETS). Compelling manufacturers, power companies, and airlines to pay for carbon permits with the EU’s climate goals.
On July 31st of next year, authorities will announce their decision regarding further permit sales for September to December 2024. The European Union aims to sell more permits in 2023 to fund efforts in the Ukraine conflict, COVID-19 recovery, and cleaner energy transitions.
The auctions in 2023 include 87 million permits for the Recovery and Resilience Facility, 35 million for the Innovation Fund, and 97 million for the Modernisation Fund. Initial 2024 auctions are to start on January 15th, per the Commission.
