EU Approves €2.6bn Aid for RWE’s Plant Closure

  • EU approves 2.6 billion euros aid to RWE for plant closure.
  • The aid supports Germany’s coal phase-out by 2038.

Germany has received European Union approval for 2.6 billion euros ($2.8 billion) in aid to RWE to shut down its coal-fired plant. The aid compensates for the previous shutting of lignite-fired plants, aligning with Germany’s coal phase-out by 2038. The aid helps RWE cope with closures and supports the EU’s 2030 climate goals. The EU prioritises environmental benefits over potential competition concerns.

RWE, Germany’s leading power producer, welcomes the decision, saying the approved sum covers the faster coal phase-out without needing extra compensation. The EU greenlights RWE’s aid but reviews LEAG’s part of the 4.35 billion euros planned for both operators. Germany’s Economy Ministry aims for swift closure on the ongoing talks with LEAG, federal states, and the EU.
