The initiative marks a major milestone for Nigeria’s clean energy transition, and the key phrase EU renewable energy project in Gombe reflects its growing national relevance. The project aims to deliver reliable electricity, support agriculture, and expand rural industrial activity.
The Balanga Dam, once a simple irrigation facility, is now evolving into a multi-purpose development engine. The site now blends hydropower, solar energy, irrigation, and agro-industrial support. Consequently, communities expect stronger economic growth and improved living standards.
During an assessment visit, officials from the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS observed the progress firsthand. The dam, built between 1979 and 1984, is now returning value after decades of limited use. The project, supported by the EU, UNIDO, the Gombe State Government, and other partners, is upgrading the facility to supply 320 kilowatts of hydropower. It will also deliver 300 kilowatts of solar PV, providing a combined output of about 620 kilowatts.
EU representative Inga Stefanowicz highlighted the power of collaboration. She explained that the work demonstrates how strategic partnerships can stimulate growth. Her comments also underlined the project’s ability to create jobs and increase opportunities for local residents.
Gombe State officials described the initiative as a long-overdue advancement. Commissioner Mohammed Saidu Fawu noted that the dam had remained underused for years. He added that the current transformation now drives economic activity and supports livelihoods.
The renewable power will supply a planned agro-processing zone located three kilometres from the dam. Farmers will process rice and other crops, increasing incomes and strengthening value chains. The expansion of irrigation canals will also enlarge the cultivable area from 2,200 to nearly 11,000 hectares.
UNIDO’s Azubike Emechebe stressed the socio-economic benefits. He said the programme empowers youth, supports industries, and enhances daily life.
State officials emphasised that the project prioritises people. They noted that the work gives young residents new opportunities to earn and contribute to community development.
EU representatives also praised the Gombe State Government for strong co-funding and leadership. They described the initiative as a blueprint for successful international partnerships.
The Paramount Ruler of Waja Chiefdom assured the team of local commitment to protecting the infrastructure. Community leaders expressed confidence that the project will deliver long-term gains.
