- EU proposes 5 billion euros for Poland’s energy transition.
- 35.4 billion euros in COVID-19 recovery funds on hold due to judiciary concerns.
The European Commission suggests giving Poland 5 billion euros ($5.45 billion) to aid its energy transition away from Russian fuels through the REPowerEU program. This edition comes with 35.4 billion euros in COVID-19 recovery funds, suspended until Poland addresses judiciary independence concerns.
The REPowerEU funds are not tied to the rule of law conditions, unlike the pandemic recovery funds totalling 76.5 billion euros for improving poorer regions. The approval for the REPowerEU funds is pending the EU finance ministers’ meeting on December 8.
