European Energy Plans Completion on its Power Plant

European Energy A/S, a Danish renewables developer, is now on track to complete its Power-to-X plant in Esberg. The plant will supply green hydrogen to the Port of Esberg in the first half of 2023.

The hydrogen produced at the plant is used by ships docked in the harbour and for industrial customers in Denmark. Additionally, the company has signed a contract with DIN Forsyning under which surplus heat from hydrogen production will be channelled to DIN Forsyning’s district heating network. In this way, the Power-to-X plant will supply heat equivalent to 200 households in the area, European Energy said on Thursday.

Claus Nielsen of DIN Forsyning noted that the Power-to-X facility’s location provides a convenient connection to the district heating system. At the same time, the temperature is suitable for the company’s district heating water, and there is no need for extra heating. In addition, the facility will be connected directly to local wind turbines. European Energy, which announced the contract with Port Esbjerg in June, says the plant could be expanded within a few years.

“The plant is also a demonstration plant within sector coupling and will provide valuable knowledge to the industry on how to make sector coupling in practice when even larger plants are to be built,” commented Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, head of Project Economics and Optimisation, Power-to-X, at European Energy.
