Europe’s Largest Energy Storage System Comes Online

  • The Mintey Battery project in the UK has been connected to the grid.
  • The 100MWh energy storage system will supply stored clean energy to Shell Energy Europe.
  • The facility is set to be expanded to 150MWh.

Chinese solar inverter and storage system maker Sungrow Power Supply said that it has completed and connected a 100MW/100MWh battery storage facility to the grid in the UK. In addition, Sungrow deployed its 1,500 V NCM and LFP battery solutions for the Minety battery project.

China’s Huaneng Group and government-backed fund CNIC are the owners of the energy storage system. They have awarded the operations and maintenance (O&M) contract to UK-based RES Group, which will monitor the facility.

The battery storage system is sited in Wiltshire, South West England, and is currently hailed as Europe’s largest battery storage project. The storage facility is set to store electricity from the national grid during low demand and high renewables generation periods and will feed it back when demand increases.

The Mintey Battery project has signed a deal with Shell Energy Europe Ltd (SEEL) to offtake the energy. The project is set to be expanded by another 50MW following the recent approval of the planning permission.
