- EWEC awards a 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project to a consortium led by EDF Renewables and KOWEPO.
- The competitive process attracts bids from ACWA Power, Marubeni Corp, and the Jinko Power/JERA alliance.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project to an international consortium. This is led by EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO), with Masdar as the local partner.
The selection followed a competitive process with bids from ACWA Power, Marubeni Corp, and a partnership between Jinko Power and JERA. EWEC will only pay for the net electrical energy supplied by the plant.
EDF Renewables and partners will develop, build, and operate the solar park, which is set to open in the third quarter of 2026. Located 70 km northeast of Abu Dhabi, the project aims to power 160,000 households and reduce carbon emissions.
This is by 2.4 million metric tonnes yearly. Abu Dhabi is expanding solar energy with the recent commissioning of the 2-GW Al Dhafra solar park and the 1.5 GW Al-Khazna solar park plans.
EWEC aims to supply over 50% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. They project adding 1.4 GW of new solar PV annually from 2027 to 2037.
