EWEC Opens Registration for Q3 2024 Clean Energy Certificates Auction

  • EWEC has launched registration for its Q3 2024 Clean Energy Certificates auction, set to close on September 13, 2024.
  • The new auction includes wind clean energy certificates from the UAE’s first utility-scale wind program, expanding renewable energy options for Abu Dhabi-based entities.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has announced the registration opening for its Q3 2024 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction. The auction aims to accelerate Abu Dhabi’s transition to cleaner energy sources and introduce new wind clean energy certificates, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing carbon emissions.

CECs enable Abu Dhabi-based entities to decarbonise their energy consumption by certifying that their electricity comes from renewable or clean sources. This certification helps organisations track and verify their progress toward environmental goals and compliance with sustainability targets.

The introduction of wind CECs, derived from the UAE’s first utility-scale wind program, marks a significant addition to the range of renewable energy options available. This program was established following a power purchase agreement signed in Q4 2023 with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC.

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, highlighted the importance of the CEC auctions in supporting Abu Dhabi’s clean energy transition. “EWEC is at the forefront of accelerating Abu Dhabi’s clean energy transition through our quarterly Clean Energy Certificate auctions,” Al Ali stated.

“The broad participation in these auctions underscores the growing commitment of entities to reduce their carbon emissions and align with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. By incorporating wind energy CECs, we have expanded the variety of available renewable and clean energy sources, helping organisations meet their sustainability targets more effectively.”

Each Clean Energy Certificate, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) units, certifies that the electricity consumed originates from a renewable or clean energy source. These certificates conform to the internationally recognised standard developed by the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), which ensures the credibility and traceability of the environmental and economic benefits of consuming clean energy.

EWEC is committed to supporting the UAE’s strategic energy goals, including the Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 for electricity production, the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, and the UAE Energy Strategy by 2050. By advancing these initiatives, EWEC aims to contribute to a sustainable and innovative future for the UAE, driven by a diversified and clean energy mix.
