Extrupet Deploys 1.3 MWp PV System in Recycling Facility

South African recycling company Extrupet is has installed a 1.3MWp solar power plant at its plastic bottle recycling factory in Wadeville, Johannesburg. Extrupet deployed the installation in collaboration with clean energy provider Solarise Africa  (who will own and maintain the plant) and NEC XON. In addition, Extrupet plans to add a battery storage system to optimise the plant’s performance. The plant currently meets about 79 per cent of the annual electricity demands of the plant, which has a recycling capacity of 4 million plastic bottles per day.

Sakkie van Wijk, commercial director of Solarise Africa, added that the solar plant would reduce electricity costs by 30 per cent in the first month and save the Extrupet  30 to 40 million South African rands ($8.8 to $2.7 million) over its life cycle. The plant has a generation capacity of 2 GWh of electricity annually. The PV system will also enable Extrupet to reduce its emissions by 1,800 tonnes of CO2 yearly.
