Liberty, Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp’s regulated utility division, has inked a power off-take agreement with Meta, formerly known as Facebook, for a 112MW wind project in Michigan.
Meta will receive the complete output and environmental qualities from the Deerfield II park under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). According to Liberty, the deal would support the social media giant’s operations and align with its sustainable goals.
The wind farm, which is now under development in Huron County, Michigan, will be near Liberty’s 150MW Deerfield I park. In April, Liberty began construction on the facility and plans to open it in 2023. The project will cost approximately USD 200 million (EUR 189.5m).
“Since 2020, our global operations have been supported by 100% renewable energy. As we continue to grow, it is increasingly important that we have strong partnerships to bring new renewable energy to the grid,” said Urvi Parekh, head of renewable energy at Meta.
Under an arrangement with the project’s original developer, Apex Clean Energy, Meta has pledged to purchase most of the electricity generated by the 80-MW Altavista solar project in Virginia. Last year, Liberty purchased a 50% interest in the plan.
